2007 Hong Kong Arts Festival officially opens today Over 90% of all seats already sold

The Hong Kong Arts Festival is pleased to announce that the 35th Festival opens today on 27 February with the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of Yuri Simonov. Response to the Festival has been exceptionally strong – five extra shows have been added as a result of the avid demand. As of today more than 99,000 performance tickets have been sold, accounting for over 90% of all seats and setting a 35-year record high for percentage of ticket sales upon the Festival Opening. Ticket sales will continue during the Festival period, from 27 February to 25 March 2007.

The official opening of the 35th Hong Kong Arts Festival was held at 7:45pm today in the foyer of the Hong Kong Cultural Centre. The Honourable Mr Donald Tsang, the Chief Executive of the HKSAR and Patron of the Hong Kong Arts Festival Society, officiated at the opening ceremony together with Mr Charles Lee, GBS, JP, Chairman of the Hong Kong Arts Festival Society; Mr John C C Chan, GBS JP, Chairman of the Hong Kong Jockey Club; Mr Vincent Cheng, Chairman of the Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited; Mrs Carrie Lam, Permanent Secretary for Home Affairs; Mr Thomas Chow, JP, Director of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department and Ms Tisa Ho, Executive Director of the Hong Kong Arts Festival Society.

This year the Festival will present over 150 performances and events featuring 34 performing groups - 23 from overseas and 11 local - and two exhibitions. As an annual international event, the Festival provides a focus for the best of international performing arts along with a vibrant contribution from Hong Kong's creative talent. It also includes a strong regional Asian component, as well as serving as a showcase for the best contemporary and traditional performing arts from China.
