The Mikhailovsky Ballet of St Petersburg, Russia performs The Sleeping Beauty in the 44th Hong Kong Arts Festival in 2016

Advance Booking begins 8 October 2015

(Hong Kong, 29 September 2015) The Hong Kong Arts Festival (HKAF) announced that the Mikhailovsky Ballet of St Petersburg, Russia will replace the Berlin State Ballet to perform The Sleeping Beauty at the 44th HKAF in 2016. The Berlin State Ballet has decided to withdraw their performances in Hong Kong due to unforeseen circumstances within their company.

The HKAF is most delighted to have the world-renowned Mikhailovsky Ballet for its Festival Finale on 19 March and other performances between 17 and 20 March 2016. The Mikhailovsky Theatre presented the world premiere of this production on 16 December 2011. It was especially created for this company by renowned Spanish choreographer Nacho Duato, their then Artistic Director of Ballet. Duato has told the famous fairy tale in his own way, preserving its incredibly romantic and magical spirit. His style is recognised both in contemporary and classical ballet; his light humour and legendary musicality captivate audiences to the very last second. The HKAF is very proud to present the Mikhailovsky Ballet’s first visit to Hong Kong.

The Mikhailovsky Ballet, brought to prominence by Artistic Director Fyodor Lopukhov in the 1930s, is well regarded at home and abroad. In 2013, the Company won the Best Company in the UK National Dance Awards. The dancers are praised as "personable, skilled and vivid" (The New York Times). The Company is led by Ballet Master-in-Chief Mikhail Messerer, and forms a triumvirate of great Russian ballet companies along with the Bolshoi Ballet and Mariinsky Ballet.

The 44th HKAF Festival Finale is sponsored by ICBC (Asia). The Hong Kong Jockey Club Student Matinee Programme on 19 and 20 March are sponsored by The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust. HKAF sincerely thanks both organisations for their wonderful partnership and support.
