Followed by tours to Shenzhen and Singapore in May and June

(Hong Kong, 31 March 2017) The Hong Kong Arts Festival (HKAF) and The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust co-presents Danz Up 2.0 (a revival of the 2016 Hong Kong Arts Festival production), in three performances in Hong Kong in May. The production will subsequently be staged in Shenzhen and Singapore.

HKAF is proud to present this home-grown production, which received high acclaim and played to 10 sold-out performances during its 2016 première run. Danz Up, teaming up street dance and theatre, was presented as part of the Jockey Club Local Creative Talents Series during the 2016 Hong Kong Arts Festival. It will now be performed as Danz Up 2.0 in Hong Kong, followed by tours to Shenzhen and Singapore.

Danz Up 2.0 is a high-octane dance drama about a young man torn between the pressure of an ordinary career and his dream of becoming a street dancer. Hip hop, jazz funk and urban dance are brought together through the choreography of Shing Mak (of the hit local dance movie The Way We Dance), music by Day Tai (two-time winner of Best Original Film Song at the Hong Kong Film Awards), direction by award-winning director Tang Wai-kit and a cast of 20 dancers and actors.

Co-presented with The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust, the Hong Kong performances of Danz Up 2.0 form part of the Festival’s 45th Anniversary celebration programmes, and will be staged on 19 and 20 May at 8pm and 21 May at 3pm at the Jockey Club Auditorium of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University.

Two performances of Danz Up 2.0 will subsequently take place on 26 and 27 May, 8:00pm, at Shenzhen’s Poly Theatre.

The two performances of Danz Up 2.0 in Singapore (9-10 June, 8:00pm, at Drama Centre Theatre) are presented by the Hong Kong Arts Festival in association with CultureLink and supported by the HKSAR Government via the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in Singapore, in celebration of the 20th Anniversary of the Establishment of the HKSAR.

ABOUT THE HONG KONG ARTS FESTIVAL (HKAF)
Launched in 1973, the Hong Kong Arts Festival is a major international arts festival committed to enriching the cultural life of the city. This year HKAF has presented over 1,700 of the world’s top artists and stars of tomorrow in 180 performances, placing equal importance on great traditions and contemporary creations. The Festival also commissions and produces work in theatre, music, chamber opera and contemporary dance by Hong Kong’s own creative talents and emerging artists, many of which have had successful subsequent runs both locally and overseas.

The Hong Kong Arts Festival is a non-profit organisation. Secured government baseline funding for the Festival in 2017 represents roughly 14% of its HK$120 million budget, with another 9% specially provided by the Government for programmes celebrating the 20th Anniversary of the Establishment of the HKSAR. Around 28% of the Festival’s income comes from the box office, and another 32% comes from sponsorships and donations from corporations, individuals, and charitable foundations. It is anticipated that the remaining 17% will come from the Government’s new matching scheme, which matches income generated through private sector sponsorships and donations.

FESTIVAL PLUS AND EDUCATION PROGRAMMES
HKAF presents over 300 outreach and educational events through its "PLUS" Programmes, Young Friends Scheme and other outreach activities that offer diverse arts experiences to the community as well as tertiary, secondary and primary school students. The Young Friends Scheme, celebrating its 25th Anniversary this year, continues to provide a platform for young people in Hong Kong to receive a well-rounded arts education, with an accumulated membership of 154,000 and participating students numbering 730,000 as of 2017.
